Practising
Playing the piano is a highly complex physical skill. As with all physical skills practice is necessary so that pupils become proficient enough to play with enjoyment and confidence. How they practise determines how quickly they learn and how secure and enjoyable the end product will be. An important part of my job is to teach methods of efficient practising. I also encourage parents to take part in practice sessions and offer advice on this and other matters relating to practising. The aim is to develop a virtuous circle where a week of good practising leads to a good productive lesson. This in turn leads to a week's good practising and so on. Progress is almost at a standstill when a pupil has practised insufficiently. A good piano lesson in itself is not enough to ensure a pupil's progress. Regular daily practice between lessons is essential. Unfortunately, there are no short cuts.
Practice doesn't make perfect. |
